YES
WE
CAN
Regardless of your political affiliation, despite what you believe will or will not happen in Iraq, or with your bank account...last night was a historical moment.
Yes we can. We let the girls stay up to watch. They watched the euphoria around the nation. Our first black president. We watched John McCain's eloquent concession speech...it was graceful and lovely. Brooke (an avid Obama supporter) felt sorry for this man who did not win, and looked at me with a woeful expression and stated how she wished there could be TWO presidents so that he wouldn't be so sad.
Yes we can. We waited anxiously for the first view of our new president. The adults in our house were divided in this race, but both of us knew without a doubt that this was a moment for the history books. They should experience it, these girls of ours. We let bedtime come and go, waiting for our new president. And out he came. His speech was an inspiration. The girls knew, they KNEW, that this was a momentous occasion of the grandest nature. Even Brooke, at the age of 6, recognizes that there has not always been a world of equality.
Yes
We
Can
Our nation has a long road ahead of it. President-elect Obama has an incredibly difficult job. But a barrier has been broken, and I think that our nation will be better for it. I believe it, our children believe it. They know these words to be true. Yes we can.
